Liberals Helped Create Trump’s New Bogeyman, the “Alt-Left”

President Donald Trump on Tuesday introduced a new nemesis to join the “fake news” media, Crooked Hillary, and Mexican rapists: the alt-left. “What about the alt-left?” Trump raged at a press conference at Trump Tower, seething over demands that he condemn the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who descended on Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend. “What about the fact that they came charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do.”

We shouldn’t be surprised that Trump is unwilling to blame white supremacists for the fatal violence that struck Charlottesville on August 12, even when one of their cohort murdered an innocent woman, Heather Heyer, who was protesting their presence in her city. We shouldn’t be surprised because his every deed and utterance has shown that he either holds similar views or is merely content to let them flourish. Nor should we be surprised by his use of the term “alt-left.” The only way he can excuse the actions of violent racists is to create a false equivalence. The press, Trump rambled, had treated the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville “very unfairly.”

But we should be at least partly surprised by the origins of this misleading and corrosive term. It is beloved by the likes of Sean Hannity and former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, who have used it to denigrate Trump’s opponents. And it has also been popularized—and legitimized—by red-baiting liberals who fear the rise of a progressive populist movement.

Unlike the term “alt-right,” which was coined by white supremacists to give their age-old movement a modern edge, the “alt-left” is an insult. As my colleague Clio Chang wrote in March of liberals who choose to use the term: “A graver sin is the adoption of a term that was created by conservatives to smear the left and discredit criticisms of the growing clout of the racist right.”

I've never seen anyone use the term alt left other than disingenuous right wingers.

Why are you in the red op?

He's right. I remember major liberal figures on Twitter referring to progressives as the Alt-Left during the height of the Hillary vs Bernie nonsense. Joy Ann Reid especially.

She and others were warned about the dangers of using the term, since there's no equivalent between a person that wants Universal Healthcare and a racist but everybody was in their feelings at the time and wasn't thinking.

Far right shytheads like to counter any terms "libtards" give them with their own cool new buzzword and this was their answer to alt-right.

Personally I think both terms are stupid and people should start calling the alt-right what they are which is white supremacists.

i'd say the alt-left is that faction that putin saw as easy pickings to siphon off democratic votes and do russia's bidding. they didn't only target wingnuts. lefties are out here :cape: for russia too (a far more openly racist country than america) and they aren't the same ones clashing with racists here in america. so just because trump wants to farcically use it on anti-facists/racists doesn't mean it's wrong for people to use on those that want to split the left into many pieces so that they aren't a collective threat to republican domination. they exist, they just weren't the ones out there in charlottesville like the orange fuhrer is saying.

Actually the term 'Alt-right' was coined by far right racist republicans to differentiate themselves from the moderate ones. That had to find a new term to describe their ideology 'cause 'white supremacist' doesn't cut it in today's society.

We all fell for it too:francis:

confused here. Are you saying no far left groups were out there protesting? Disregard the rest of my post if that's not what you're saying.

People who are accused of "splitting the left" were protesting the nazis

The democratic socialists of America was out there. IWW was out there. International Socialists Organization, Black lives matter.

to add to neera's nonsense

In a now deleted tweet, She accused the "alt left"(dem socialists) wanted to join the nazis at the lighting the night before. This was a common theme from high profile twitter liberals.

Except it was the dem socialists and actual left who were out here protesting and defending people :dahell:

Neera is the head of Center of American progress. john podesta is also on the board of it. She 100 percent would have been a candidate for the Clinton White House

for over a year, she's been tweeting disingenuous nonsense. Equating the people who want Medicare for all with the nazis :martin:

bernie ain't alt-left. he's no russia stooge like jill stein and her supporters. for me all of these "alt" factions, right or left have one thing in common: they love putin and help spread his propaganda. they differ in other areas obviously.
