Tutor reveals Ivy-admissions madness of rich penthouse parents

I think a lot of time we focus on these rich kids who get into school because of connections, but neglect that there are many rich kids who actually benefited from getting great private educations and tutors. I got to school with a lot of these types of kids. It makes it easier that they don't have to worry about finances, but a lot of them get scholarships anyway. They know their shyt basically. I personally know a few people who wouldn't have to work/study a day in their life but something motivates them to get a degrees, and not some bullshyt degree either. But it probably has to do with my current major and the people it attracts.

I've always wondered what it would be like attending a school like that. Would you say these students are 'smarter' or just have the right tutors and schooling? And what are you studying too?

yeah pretty much, if you read the article carefully you can see where the author says explicitly that money only gets you so far, and a lot of these rich kids fail to get in, the lesson i got is that you have to prepare and plan for ive league and use your available resources

i dont know if these posters are black but you already have a couple of posters on going to ive league, my point is you already lost the race before it began with that attitude or mentality, this whole thing is a war and in this war the asians are winning because they study harder, black people are losing because they dont study as hard, this article gives you insight into your enemies battle plans, that is what i get and also it tells me what a joke AA is, with AA black people are bringing a knife to a gun fight

It's tutoring and having a more supportive environment. If you're in a crap school and at home no one cares, what is the likelihood the kid him/herself is going to know what to do? Many successful kids from a less affluent upbringing still have their parents guiding them along. Kids can also be screwed by being smart, but not knowing how to position their application the best for top schools. You have to SELL yourself on the personal statement. You can't just use some basic I'm from..., I grew up ...., etc.

I'm not a fan of all these standardized tests, but that's the other game you have to deal with. Often times kids without guidance don't take prep classes or start studying too late for the SAT's and stuff. One main problem I have with all these tests, GPA's, etc is it still makes you seek approval from others. You want that teacher to give you an A, you want the best school to accept you, etc. If you're not careful, it can turn you into a drone even if you're a $100,000k plus one.

I'm all for a good education, but you have to shake things up too. Get hands on experience EARLY! Two years of good training is worth more than a piece of paper. Even more of a priority is to learn to network. Kids aren't taught the art of networking is regular schools. Conspiracy nuts want to bring up Skull & Bones and all those societies, but at the end of the day they're just networking groups. Learn to play the game!

How oversimplified can you get?

No, we are winning because we have high amounts of disposable income that we tend not to spend with high priorities on supplemental education. Asians buy their kids lots of books, send their kids to cram school, buy ACT/SAT/PSAT/LSAT/MCAT/GRE prep no matter what, and when possible drop bread on private schools. You are correct that this is in part 'culture' but poorer asians are not capable of doing so, and as a result, tons of them work joe jobs or own food stores, laundromats, restaurants etc. You see asians and see a high percentage of doctors, whatever. But this isn't all just from sweat and scholarships, it's also from asians building wealth and passing it on to the next generation in the form of supplementary work.
