Fellow Rec Roomers,

I'm moving the current 55-inch HDTV I have in my living room to the office, replacing it with an XL 75-inch model. I've whittled my choices down the TCL Roku 6 series and the Samsung 4K 8 series. They're both $1,300..and really, that's the ceiling of my budget, I wouldn't really want to go beyond that for this TV (I'm broke, 1 star, neg, dap/undap).

I'm not a TV expert like some of the cats on here...Is TCL matching or exceeding Sammy's image quality? I've heard it has a fantastic UI. Do either suffer from "soap opera" effect and can I mitigate it? Let me know what ya'll think.

Out of those two, the TCL is a better TV

Outside of Samsung's Q70/Q80/Q90 series, anything below it those three series is no go.

Samsung RU8000 Review (UN49RU8000, UN55RU8000, UN65RU8000, UN75RU8000, UN82RU8000)

TCL 8 Series 2019/Q825 QLED Review (65Q825, 75Q825)

Don't let brand name fool you
Glad you said it because Brokey would have deflected his poverty on me :hhh:

Seriously tho, you know what is testing higher than the tcl right now? The newest hisense (i think it's roku too)

Yes, the brand we've all made fun of is leading the charge. Hi-sense H9F is the model. I seen a YouTube video on best TVs for fall 2019 and that was the winner. You're welcome :francis:

A good 55 inch TV cost somewhere around $1000-$1300. If you're getting a 75 inch TV for that price its probably a low tier TV.

The TCL isn't even a 120hz native panel it's 60hz. At least the Samsung is native 120hz. They both have fake HDR because neither has a native 10 bit panel they're both 8 bit and use backlight trickery to claim 10 bit.

As pluses for the TCL it supports Dolby Vision and HDR10 and it has better WiFi on it with Wireless AC. Also the built in Roku is more likely to maintain smart tv updates than the Samsung. The HDR isn't gonna be the full blown quality like on a good TV but at least support is there.
Comparison between: 74.5" Samsung UN75RU8000, 74.5" TCL 75R617

I’m fine with a 60hz refresh hate because I hate the “soap opera effect”

120hz isn't the soap opera effect that is motion interpolation which is a setting on TVs that can be turned off.

You typically need more that 60hz to avoid judder on 24fps content. On a 60hz screen frames have to be unnaturally repeated to match the TVs frame rate on movies.

Right breh, so saeth The Coli :russ:
You can get a better TV if you go down in screen size or if you bump up the budget to $2000. If you're getting a Samsung accept nothing less than a Q7 QLED. As for TCL all they make are budget sets. They don't even make a 120hz panel TV or a true 10 bit one.

I wouldn't wanna buy either of the ones you listed but if I had to pick one I'd go TCL. It has more features even if the Samsung has the 120 hz panel.

TVs work like this. If you aren't within 2 models of the flagship you're probably getting junk. The Samsung flagship is Q9 then there's Q8 and Q7. Once you go Q6 or below you're getting an inferior panel. Those are the TVs they sell to people who have a set price and will only spend that much quality be damned.
