I'm not attacking or defending anything. What I'm recongnizing is the appeal of FBA over "African American" as a descriptor for vast majority of us here in the states seeing as how it applies to him more than it does me.
It would have been best if you finished your statement out then, because the way you left it leaves it very open to interpretation and there are plenty here on this site who do have an axe to grind with various Black American organizations they disagree with. So if it was not your intention to attack a Black group in defense of that racist, then I stand corrected.
Second, the vast majority of us, Black Americans, in the states do not call ourselves FBA. Those who do are actually just a subset of Black Americans, a small subset at that. Also, the descriptor does not apply to him at all. He is not African, he is an Afrikaner. Those are two different things. White racists normally joke about him being an African American, but that does not make it true. His heritage is Boer and they call themselves Afrikaner in the land they stole from the actual Africans. So I am pretty sure most of my people who know his background do not recognize him as having any sort of actual claim on the moniker of "African American". He definitely does not have a greater claim to that than we do.

A small subset of people that want to define themselves, on their own terms rather than be *Asterisk American. White folks come from anywhere in the world and be plain old American as long as they're born here.

I have no problem with what I bolded. I have neither a problem with the designations FBA nor ADOS. We Black Americans are always changing our collective name as time progresses it seems. Right now they are small subsets, but who knows in the next 10 years? One of them may win out and become the majority, a new moniker may rise and that take the crown, or we just remain a people with multiple different monikers we call ourselves while still understanding that we are all the same ethnicity. I am older though, so no matter what I will continue to call myself Black (American).

The issue with this is that it invalidates the definition of being a black American too.
Keep in mind the first Boers arrived in South Africa in 1652, only 30 years after the first slave ship arrived in New England in 1619. Whites have been out there for nearly half a millennium and nearly as long as African Americans have been in the US . At some point they are no longer guests, but rent paying residents.
I agree that Elon can't be black. But that doesn't stop him from being a white African, anymore than Habibi in Egypt cant be a Arab African or can stop Hindu-African Rajesh in Tanzania.
