Nah Twitter is right, I would've Check Her For all dat You can respect someone and Have respect for them, all she had to say was ''Its Ms Angelo'' and smile thats it, I personally can't stand old folks who think just cause they bout to leave the earth in about 7 days they can just talk down on anyone and don't have to be good people no more, and then when they get left in a nursing home they be wonderin why.... :hhh:

I remember I had to check my disrespectful great uncle cause buddy was talkin down, I respect my elders but don't sow disrespect you don't have the nerve and fortitude to reap.

Of Course this is another one of those unspoken social norms that many in the black community tend to just follow, Elders and mommas always gonna get defended irregardless if they trippin or not. I know she from that old way of thinking so thats why shes like that but today ain't yesterday

Survived longer than you have in this thing called life. One of my fav quotes

“Don’t make fun of older people.... you never know if you’ll live as long”

Unless they are dead, they’ve lived longer, have more experience, have experiences you never will have (due to changes in time and life) and can speak to all those things. You should respect that, again, until you find out otherwise.
I was just going to say this, especially as black people in america :stopitslime:

I was born in 84 and as a child i was rasied not to address elders by there first name. she looked like a pre teen and should have known better.
So was I. December 1984 in Kinston, NC. Was raised to address elders as sir, ma'am, hold doors and speak respectfully to everyone. As an elder, she was in her rights to correct the child, nit shame a child who had made a mistake in addressing her. Being an elder isnt a license to speak to people crazy and since she was not related to that child, she should have been measured in her response to any perceived disrespect. Her being an elder with a tremendous platform actually demands that she model the respect she expected from the young lady. There is right way and a wrong way to address people and they were both wrong.

I was born in December also. :salute:

I don't think she was wrong at all. Yeah she publically shamed her but sometimes people need that. Now Maya is not her family but she is not just anybody you can call Maya. That girl was wild direspectfull and needed that pubic shameing. Now the mark of her character is how she handles it after. Did she become bitter or laughed it off. Who knows

Above the fray.
I woulda told Maya to suck my dikk if that was me.

bytch wouldn't have said that to a cac.
On the contrary, I'm guessing the the young lady in the audience wouldn't call her white boyfriend's mom by her first name.

"Hello, Mrs. Cunnnigham, is Chad home ? May I speak to him?"

Fact that she was so young and asking questions about inter racial dating, yet didn't know to NOT address an older Black woman by her first name is troubling.

Maya could have just told her in a more respectful way to refer to her as Miss Angelou.

She put on the theatrics and basically probably made her feel stupid in front of all of those people

Fake outrage bullshyt. This was all about Angelou’s ego not her being disrespected. The girl didn’t intend any disrespect even if you want to say that she didn’t use proper etiquette or whatever. Angelou shined on the girl because she could. It’s like the people with PhDs or medical degrees feeling disrespected when people don’t refer to them as doctor. It’s ego.

To prove it’s all bullshyt, Oprah is 65 which is older than Angelou was in this clip. How often do you hear her referred to as “Ms. Winfrey”? How often to hear Michelle referred to as “Mrs. Obama”?

“You don’t have the license to refer to me by my first name”. You cats are co-signing that arrogant bullshyt?

Compare a media mogul whose brand is associated with her unique first name to a writer who was a guest on a talk show, Brohams !

Pretend that I didn’t give you another example just so you can dodge the point dummy. Pretend that I can’t gife you 5-10 more examples of older women who are public figures who are constantly referred to by their first name with no problems just to dodge the point dummy.

Pretend you have a response to the "my name is my brand" post about Oprah, brother.
