The thing with 9th is, he did make FL Studio popular with boom bap style producers who use software instead of hardware. But even then, people looked at FL as some amateur shyt, whereas with Soulja Boy...he had young cats scrambling to get FL Studio thinking they were gonna blow from their bedroom. So 9th may have been using it first, but he wasn't actively pushing for it...at least not that I saw.
I don’t think the two crossover enough to even have this argument. Personally the first conversations I ever heard about it was about 9th Wonder. I never heard anyone mentioning Soulja Boys actual production. From 9th Wonder the next time I heard mention of the conversation of FL was during the snap era then the biggest influence was the 808 Mafia era. I know those timelines are way off but those are the only times I’ve even heard people talk about it.
Sooooo is this 9th’s whole catalog vs Crank Dat? I mean wasn’t 9th around years before SB? Didn’t he have a placement on an important Jay Z album before we knew who SB was? I mean I’m no 9th Stan or anything and I have a love hate relationship with a lot of his beats but come on now lol. You can give him his props.
All I heard back then was this guy name 9th Wonder uses a program called fruity loops on a computer and it garnered mixed views from music publications and beat makers.
It was looked as gimmicky. 9th is right that Soulja made it more widely known because of Crank Dat blowing up and YouTube showing how it was made on the demo version.
Both deserve some credit but to this day that weak ass snare 9th used and abused sounds bad lol
9th legitimized FL for sure. No way around it. He was doing bangers for big names like Jay and Destiny's Child before Soulja even dropped his first hit record. That being said. Soulja Boy made it MAINSTREAM popular to where basically everyone knew what it was who wasn't even interested in production.
