Speaking of D'angelo, what bums me out the most about his death is he was one of the few last great black relatively young forward thinking musicians that...sounded black as hell. I love experimental, weird music as much as the next person. It's why I loved P-Funk, Outkast, MF DOOM, Digable Planets/Shabazz Palaces, Maxwell's Embyro. But all that music still sounded "black" tho, as out there as it got.
As much as I fukk with alternative r&b, sometimes I wonder if the genre itself is becoming white washed. You could make these same criticisms about The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Drake, Fka Twigs, Doja Cat, Frank Ocean, and Steve Lacy. Hip-hop & R&B for cacs that needed somewhere to go after rock completely fell off in the early 2010's.
