DETROIT (Do Every Thing Right Or It's Trouble)
I was literally on SOHH the day Yonkers dropped and the OF movement started. Still a huge fan of the Internet and Earl was/is my favorite spitter in the crew and of course Frank was dropping critically acclaimed classics. So I say this as someone who’s seen his whole career unfold.

But time to call it out. This man has NO hit records. Extremely average bars where he literally ain’t saying shyt. Earl’s I Don’t Like shyt I Don’t Go Outside lyrically shyts on anything Tyler has ever written and that album dropped 10 years ago.

He’s been compared to his idols Kanye and Pharrell but he’s literally nooooowhere near their level in terms of creativity or originality. He rehashes a lot of their sounds. He’s never produced a project or made a hit record for anyone while those two practically gave away hits in hip hop and R&B. To me there’s really nothing to compare between them other than they both rap and produce. I can’t think of one memorable record from his discography that stands out as something special. I have joints I really like (See You Again, Run It Up, Droppin Seeds) but they’re just nice cool records.

After a couple spins of the new album it just sounds like a mess. He’s trying to channel a Kaytranada vibe on some of the records but none of it rocks. He made a post after releasing the album talking about why people don’t dance anymore but you can’t dance to any of the shyt on this album! It doesn’t bounce or groove like that. You won’t see ANY shorties shakin they ass to this this summer.

He has amazing marketing and has crafted his image over the last decade brilliantly and I think he shines there more than any music he’s ever made. I know some Coli nikkas really like him and view him as some hip hop messiah but he doesn’t have any records that I truly want to go back and revisit after the initial drop and hype wears off. This year we got legit potential classic albums in :

Clipse - Let Go Sort ‘Em Out
Rome Streetz - Trainspotting
Larry June x Cardo - Until Night Comes
Larry June x Alc x Chainz - Life is Beautiful
MIKE - Showbiz!

Iceman coming soon and Freddie x Alc dropping this Friday. I can’t see this album topping any end of year lists or the joints I mentioned above from such a “critically acclaimed” artist.

What do yall think?
Dog, who the fukk waiting on “Iceman” to drop? :mjlol: hell no

And with a song of that “success”. I guarantee if you play it at any halftime event, homecoming, mall, Starbucks, New Year’s party, etc you’d get nothing but crickets.

Tyler and OF have built a great career for themselves but their music is insular to their specific audience.

Would you say SuicideBoys has hits? Because they too have songs that are multiple times platinum. In fact they have a song that’s 3x platinum that I’ve never heard of until me right now using it as an example for this post:

Platinum records are hits and he has several no matter how much a dusty old head tries to change the definition of a hit record or hates it or how out of touch they are :mjlol: This era has passed you flat tops by.… and nobody values your input.… Mobb Deep isn't dropping any new albums and that makes you sad...i know LMAO

:dead:

EDIT...Prodigy is dead, hope that was unintentional

Having a dedicated built in fan base is way better than having pop hits.

Tyler’s fan base will rock with him until he’s kool moe dee’s age

And it’s not a small fan base either it’s arguably bigger than most of the popular rappers people on here follow

I agree that he is overrated but he def got hits like sticky, see you again and earthquake. He does numbers and is touring arenas. I don't think he is that great of a rapper and his production sometimes is beyond influence just copying Neptunes at some point.

You don't tour arenas and not have hits.

Ya'll like to confuse opinions with facts.

Bruno Mars is actually tolerable and appeals to commercial audiences.

All I can say about Tyler is kids like him but that’s about it
thats not true at all. He legit has a core fanbase that he's built since Goblin in 2011, maybe even b*stard which came before that.

That was over 14 years ago. Most of his original core fans are in their late 20s/early 30s

Like, if u were 7 years old when u heard Goblin (seriously doubt it, but for the sake of this scenario), you can drink legally now. Tyler been around for so long now. Goblin dropped less than a year after Drake's Thank Me Later.

Tyler’s a good rapper and his work is solid.. but yeah I agree,, his career is missing that transcendent timeless hit like a juicy or a not like us that will make people appreciate how great he is..
to be fair, most rappers that are all-time greats dont have a Juicy. Kendrick just gave us Not Like Us last year, and he's been in rap for 15 years before that song. damn near no one has a Not Like Us. It's the most decorated rap song in the history of the genre. Off the top of my head, i can't think of a rap song that dominant. Maybe Lose Yourself... maybe?
