It can definitely work early on, before kids, and before the career paths start getting intense. But, as you say, the energy is different and he really starts to feel it as he begins to require more support from home. I'm glossing over it, but there's a certain point where you need to be 'poured into' (hate that phrase). What happens when both partners need to be poured into and neither one has anything left to give to the other? They start looking for new energy sources to feed a system running at a deficit.
