probably a mix of things including increasing surveillance (cameras everywhere) and even weed legalization

This a little theory I have...a few of my friends disagree with me. I believe it's partly due to technology and the procrastination that comes with it. There's almost 5 billion people on the planet using smartphones, that represents 60% of the earth's population. And the number of users is only going to go up.

People spend more times on their smartphones, be it functional 9-5ers or "career criminals". Let's say a guy makes a career in crime, he's probably going to be on his phone a few hours a day not committing crime. And some people use smartphones to broaden their horizons and learn new things.

For all the crazy things going on in the world, there's been no better time, in history, to be a human being than it is now.

I think you guys are right about technology. Both that crime is now done using technology, and that crime was stopped because of technology.

I looked up the crimes that @Mister Terrific mentioned that Ramirez did on his serial killing spree in the mid '80s and pretty much all of them could have been stopped by CCTV and home alarm systems which probably didn't exist back then. As gruesome as they were, I read through most of the things Ramirez did, and it looks like they took at a lot of time. So if you try to break into a single house and did all the sick sht he liked to do, then the police would be there before he ever finished. And if he ran they would catch him using CCTV like they did Luigi in New York.

And on @Raw Lyrics point, I think a modern-day Ramirez would probably be dry snitching on himself on social media. So there'd be an FBI van in front of his house real quick.
