The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reaffirmed its commitment to sending a probe to Mars in 2021. More details have emerged of the planned mission, which is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the UAE's formation. In this new video, from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), scientists explain how the 1,500 kilogram Hope (or "al-Amal" in Arabic) spacecraft will study the Martian atmosphere and climate.

If successful, not only will it become the first Arabian mission to Mars, it will also create the first planet-wide picture of how the Martian atmosphere changes throughout the day and between seasons. This could improve our understanding of how aerosols, ozone, water ice, water vapour and other physical processes affect us here on Earth, while also being useful in planning future manned colonies. The resulting data will be shared freely with over 200 institutions worldwide. More information is available on the MBRSC website, which includes an image gallery.

Dubai's economy doesn't even rely on oil. The rest of the UAE tho...

But the work they've done diversifying their economy has been admirable.

The UAE is a new country (since 1971) and their economy has grown more than 100 times since that day. The rise of Dubai/UAE has been remarkable thanks to the oil reserves and most importantly, good use of the revenues. Well, the country itself is still reliant on oil (but still the most diverse GCC economy) but Dubai, for example, barely rely on oil. But the efforst to have a diversified economy have been remarkable. They'll have some setbacks once the oil dries up but they can go forward.

God damn I wish we'd have ourselves a good old fashioned space race. There are few things in this world that push technology like a pissing contest in space.

let others spend money on mars right now imo

we gotta spend more money on asteroid/comet scenarios just to be in the clear in the possibility it ever happens. obviously the odds are low and we have potential threats charted out for a long time but i dont think the world has any proper plan to deal with that if we are really faced with a huge threat..seems like itll just be "welp, find the shelters and hope for the best"

We've got the comet/large asteroid scenario pretty much figured out. We've landed rovers on them. All we would do is put a rocket on them to move their trajectory. It's really not all that complicated if you know the threat far enough in advance. (Small meteors are a different story.)

Going to Mars is important because in the future we are going to have to move if we want our species to survive. It's not about moving to Mars, but it's about the capability of inhabiting other planets.

We have to continually focus on space for that reason, and the corollary effect is that the technologies are used in more practical ways on earth.

If (when) we can terraform Mars, why not just terraform earth instead, so we don't have to move as soon?

I hear you on that. but NASA funding has been significantly cut the past few years and i looked at the breakdown of how they spend money and their "defense" program doesnt have nearly enough. now..on the other hand..its likely that $ would be ramped up significantly in the event of a small meteor or comet/large asteroid danger situation...(i already mentioned they have them charted long in advance)

i do like terraforming mars but thats going to be incredibly complicated to say the least. we dont have nearly enough $ to go into that unless its literally a world wide effort

Because Mars is open territory and you have to step on toes to do it here on earth.

Here's an example of why it pushes technology. Right now we're trying to develop a way to create oxygen from carbon dioxide on Mars without using a significant amount of energy. There isn't any money to be made off that technology, so companies on earth aren't trying it.

But do you see how that could be hugely beneficial to the Earth? Right now we rely on trees/plants to process CO2 into oxygen, if we could do it at an industrial scale on earth then we could perhaps control the makeup of the atmosphere and stop climate change altogether.

The whole space program will be run by Indians, c@cs or other Asians. The local Ayrabs are actually some of the stupidest people on earth, they out source everything..
