It's purely for marketing purposes at this point. I think it devalues the status of the champ and should only be used in cases where the champ has retired or otherwise vacated the belt.
It makes sense, but I can also see why someone would call bullshyt on this one. We're not sure the current champ even wins this tonight to tie the division up by trying to defend both belts or moving up. He could possibly lose, and be right back to cleaning the division out. A cynical view on it is that this is just to keep continuity with that division's belt being eligible to be defended in some form in the immediate future, or use a unification fight to sell Volkanovski's next defense.
