It may look like Edmen was wasting energy throwing all those head kicks that were blocked, but the thing about blocking head kicks for three rounds is they add up. They beat the crap out of your wrists and forearms from “double blocking”, and the blunt force of the kick- even though blocked- will still begin to ring your bell a little more with each kick. That is why, if you noticed, Petroski wobbled after blocking that final head kick towards the end of the fight. It didn’t “hurt” or anything, his head health was just withered away from the blunt force of blocking head kicks for three rounds.
