So it begins :wow:

Laying the groundwork for a Nigel Farage Prime Minstership to implement increasingly authoritarian measures.

An under-reported aspect of recent history is how left leaning governments help create circumstances that right wing governments later exploit. Like democratic administrations laying down the groundwork for what Joseph McCarthy would later exploit in the Red Scare.

In the US the government knows you by your social security not your name. The surveillance state started a long time ago

We have this in EU.

The Italian version:

You can do a lot of procedures electronically (from school enrollment of your children, to obtaining a birth certificate)...

In Estonia they even vote this way since 2001:
Interesting feature: they can change their vote as much as they want until the election day, only the last choice counts.

I don't think an electronic ID adds that much to the existing surveillance, you already have Cambridge Analytica and similar companies in UK...

You're already surveilled, and those private companies are worse than any government, since they are not bound by the same legal procedures to protect your data...

I'm not sure how the IDs stop immigration, we have both legal and illegal immigration, and digital IDs lol

UK are specialists at being data breached. All the cyberattacks that have happened in the past week. Some major businesses still haven't resolved attacks from August. The government will try and want banks accounts linked to that electronic ID. :francis: just imagine all the damage can be done when the government being lazy and being cheap storing all the information in one place. Could bankrupt half of the population before anyone notices and then by the time the other half have tried to react that's gone too.

We have to be careful with terms like left leaning. Keir Starner is a centrist.
