Camp Lo doesn't fit in that category at all.

AT ALL

If you really listen to Camp Lo they got mad aggressive bars and they are definitely one of the most slept-on lyricists/groups ever.
Lots of f-ckery/partytime/hood vibes in their songs and they throw a dope live performance.
Maybe @DOSDUMUNI typed Camp Lo on accident LOL

cuz in no universe would anyone call Camp Lo "preachy"

De La pretty old at this point, so as performers I understand them not being super energenic.

Musically their prime was 89-93ish (Stakes is High aside), so their stuff can sound dated, but I was just listening to Buhloone Mindstate and it still holds up.

A LOT of stuff from the late 80s/early 90s (pre-93) is typically harder for me to get into (ATCQ, Kool G Rap and a few others aren't), b/c I was so young at the time it was released and compared to anything released in say 1995, it sounds ancient. BUT, i've been giving these older classics their flowers and revisiting them more and they do hold up.

I think De La would have been a great show by themselves before Dave died, in a smaller venue. As an intro to Nas & Wu they weren't great. Like others said AZ would have been a better fit, or MOP.

Most of all it was a bit depressing without Trugoy. I feel like Pos & Maseo need to form a new group with somebody like Mos Def. I think its best to retire De La Soul like Tribe, Run DMC, Beasties did after a member died.

I won't call them haters either, they just had some songs that questioned the shyttier trends in Hip Hop. Classic, adventurous and intellectual group.

Are those groups even regularly preaching the shyt you said tho???

They probably didn’t, but like the title of the thread said..them nikkas was boring :manny:

Cats like KRS, Rakim, X-clan and Chuck D was entertaining with that lyrical/conscious rap.

this sadly might be the truth.
Not saying the remaining living members can't perform but maybe under a different name
Maybe just call them "De La" now?

And you say youre a hip hop journalist? :usure: cant even respect de la soul enough learn about them. Thats your job, fool.
Never said I was a journalist, lol. I was maybe 20 years old at the time. Grew up in the Midwest but listened to a lot of Cash Money/No Limit/Triple Six/Outkast, more than anything at the time. I fw Mos heavy tho, then and still today. I had no clue that man would be there that night, the friend I went with knew exactly who bro was and more or less carried the conversation. I was on some immature shyt, trying to steal drinks from Mos room in the back. Can’t deny my lack of discipline at the time, but also can’t deny that De La Soul is boring as hell either.

all music isn't for everyone. Some albums yall swear are the greatest, I think are fukin terrible. It's all about preference.
There's also a big "anti backpacker" attitude in the Booth and De La Soul embodies that so you have to take some of these claims with a grain of salt.

I noticed people have been discrediting Common on here at times for this as well.

I saw part of the De La set during the recent Amazon recording of their tour. It was clear the crowd were moreso there for Wu/Nas but they still got hyped and De La's performance was very energetic. They also got bangers.

Album wise I don't see how someone who likes 90s rap can't enjoy De La Soul Is Dead, for instance. The skits and way that album is recorded have had direct influence over so many albums. The beats are dope. The storytelling is dope. Is it as dope or knocking as say...a Tribe album? No, in my opinion. But they've always been dope. Even on albums that aren't necessarily the ones that get mentioned/praised first.

Saw them live in 2010 and it’s still one of my favourite shows I’ve seen. Stage and mic presence on point, had the crowd vibing the entire show.

I get they aren’t for everybody but original post is full of bad takes. listen to I am I be and tell me they have no quotables. :francis:

Backpacker?

I'd call Jeru the Damaja, Boot Camp Clik, DITC, Def Squad etc backpacker before De La Soul.

But to each they own I guess.
