That's crazy about Hammer, but I do think you're right. Its crazy that he blew up and is still known for that one song. When I think of Hammer though, I think of the Troop suit and Oaktown 357 in the back. I guess in the mainstream he was this one hit wonder. Cray.

nah. hammer wasnt a one-hit wonder in the mainstream. he was THE MAN.

its the people who missed out on that era that think he was one-n-done.

and there goes the mandatory blaming the downfall of an artist's popularity on gangsta rap with pictures of 2pac, nwa & snoop doggy dogg.

they even threw in one of too short.

@tremonthustler1

It is kinda true though. Outside of Hammer, and even he was on his way down, their type of hip hop wasn't being pushed.

youre getting unsung mixed up with under the radar.

you have to have been a big star to get an episode on this show breh.

90% of black stars are unsung, or become unsung.

Then they might as well do an Unsung Jay Z episode 25 years from now

i agree & disagree.

sure "gangsta rap" was the main game in town but it wasnt the only game.

you gotta factor in the changing of the guard. kid-n-play was old school by '93. point blank. they came out in '87 and were the same age as run dmc who came out in '83. theyre like the same age as my parents breh.

plus some of the most synonymous rappers with kid-n-play are salt n pepa, heavy d & the boyz. those acts stayed strong until like '97. and then of course you have ll cool j. and there was a slew of fun rap acts that blew up in that timeframe as well.

if jay-z falls out of favor behind the scenes and they stop force-feeding his legacy, then yea he could in fact become unsung by then.

take a look at the list of people who had unsung episodes breh. this show is for the STARS. not under-the-radar artists.

Gangsta rap wasn't the only game in town no doubt, but between that and hardcore rap in general there wasn't much room for "fun" or "dance" rap at that time (circa 93). It was a dying style. You still had a few joints sprinkled in here and there, but no one was fukking with KnP anymore when you had West Coast Gangsta Rap, underground rap at the time, East Coast Hardcore rap, etc. And we know those types of rap were being pushed more by the major corporations who were taking over hip hop at that time as well.

That late 80s/early 90s Golden Era of hip hop (pre Chronic) was balanced and great. you had KnP, SnP, Redhead Kingpin, Chubb Rock types. You had your early gangsta rap shyt from NWA/Ice-T, Pro Black shyt, Rakim/Kane. Just greatness without having to sell out to the mainstream.

Great Episode though. When I found out how old them nikkaz were even during their prime, I was shocked.

yea i agree. but im just saying that theres more to it then just gangsta & hardcore rap taking over behind the scenes. their time wouldve been up regardless. or at best, they wouldve had 1 more album to run with big.

yea, i always figured they were around 20-21 when they did house party. them dudes was like 26-28. lol.

i dont know why people are on here saying that their run was short-lived. they were poppin for a good 6 years at least and lasted thru 2 of the best eras ever.

as for the show feeling incomplete, they each had their own "life after" specials on tv-one 4-5 years ago. those are complimentary to the unsung special. you kinda have to watch them all together to get the full dish. check em out. they got more personal with play on "life after". iirc, i think they got more personal with kid on unsung.

they did an episode on daryl "chill" mitchell as well, and debuted it the same night as kid's joint. they dubbed that night "life after house party". i remember that. good times.

I don't think they had a 6-year run. I think their run was 90-93, from when they were poppin. Rollin with Kid & Play wasn't really in rotation til '89 and reached popularity with the movie. By '93 they weren't even held highly. Like I said, their most known track is The batlle. Without House Party, they become just another group.

I think they should've just aged their image and did more acting to continue into the next era.

they were huge before the movie. thats how they landed their roles.

most of their most popular music was before house party breh.

ur right about me stretching it to '93 tho.

So you're saying that no one knows the words to the battle from House Party? So if I start off

"So it's the P-l-a-y, just here to say Hi, asking you may I, tell you bout the day I
picked up the microphone pad and the pen, the legend of the tramp begins
The party host, with the most giving you a dose, see.."

I didn't even have to look that ish up. Ninjas will finish that entire thing off THEN argue for an hour about who won. No one knows the words to Kid n' Play songs...hooks, sure but not words. I'm not dissin them but it's the truth. House Party and their dance solidifes their place in hip-hop forever. They are hip-hop.
