Uhhh yes they are. They don't want no problems with the greatest killing force in the history of the world. If America starts to feel like the Mexican cartels are a threat to Americans, how long before you got American soldiers rolling across the border? Yes those cartels are heavily armed and violent but they don't want those problems. Killing Mexicans is one thing, but Americans? Nah.

Forces like the terrorists, cartels, etc. who engage in guerilla warfare are probably the worst opponents for the U.S - especially one so close in proximity and who also got connections all inside law enforcement. It's a messy conflict and like fighting smoke.
As a soldier you'd have to be concerned not only for yourself, but your family as well especially seeing the largest group in the military during recent times are Latin American and probably have family in that country.
