A lot of different reasons
One was Andre Harrell and Puffy had a fallen out. Andre fired Puff. Puffy played a huge role in being the go to guy in what worked in terms of records and style.
Also tension between Uptown and Jodeci and Mary and that's when Suge came into the fold and helped them out with new contracts.
Eventually Andre left the label when he became the CEO of Motown and then Heavy D was promoted for vice president to president and CEO of Uptown
Then over the course of the next couple of years, Heavy resigned from being the CEO/president, distribution of Uptown switched up
And eventually Uptown was absorbed into Universal Records
