More of a political L. The military defeated the Taliban government with some special ops teams in a few months.

Ehh. This is the same Taliban government, the remnants of it. Thats like if we beat the Nazis but they still held out and got to negotiate themselves back into German parliament :ld:

You right tho

The military exists to kill people and blow stuff up. Not route out centuries old religious practices or build nations in the model of America. Same with Vietnam and Iraq, really. If the government gives them an impossible mission...one that's not even within their purview, thats on the politicians.

Just watched a Frontline where they talked to ISIS fighters in Afghanistan who said if the Taliban signs the peace agreement that many Taliban fighters out of retaliation will join ISIS since it's viewed as a betrayal. Dude may have been capping or maybe not.

In the Silver Lining
Incredible that America's longest war in history was against a completely outmatched, virtually unarmed opponent who never went anywhere near America nor had any reason to.

It's not surprising.
Trillions of dollars was provided for warmongering.

the ether
damn what a mess, a mess for the civilians!

feel bad for the people.

Afghanistan's people are some of the most fukked over in the entire world.

Their entire history they've had to withstand invasions from Iranians, Mongols, Turks, Indians, Brits, etc. Then the last 50+ years they've been under basically constant war. First the Soviets invaded, then the mujahudeen flooded in, then the Americans came in alongside the mujahudeen to fuel a low-key proxy war against the Soviets, when the Soviets were run out the warlords all started fighting with each other and REALLY fukked up the place, then the Taliban beat them all and took over, then the USA rolled in and started fighting the Taliban.

52 fukking years of war. Imagine if you AND your papa AND your grandpapa had never known anything other than war. Literacy rate just 38%. Life expectancy just 60 years. Child mortality 10x American levels. Hard to get shyt right when you got nothing but war around.

Reading all the Khaled Hosseini novels and getting an understanding of how fukked up their world was over there significantly influenced the direction of my life.

absolutely, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain, all they want is a simple life of peace.
Is it harsh of me thinking if the soviet's were successful and gained power in AFG then the last 20 - 30 years of mayhem would be avoided as such?
the war, both outside intervention an civil is what keeps setting the place back and destroying its society, culture and people but what good can the Taliban bring?
They are worst then any kind of fundamentalist regime i've heard about.
