:yeshrug: The macro economic and political landscape does not support having children. I would be very interested in seeing if there were any substantial disparities across racial and class lines. My Black peers/family/friends all aspire to have children at some point or already have kids, it doesn't matter if they are white collar, blue collar, or poor. Whereas with my white friends who are mostly white collar, it is a mixed bag.

A very good book to check out regarding the different attitudes regarding long term goals across class lines is Joan C. Williams's "The White Working Class". In it she points out that the professional managerial class emphasizes self-actualization as one of the the primary goals in life, and having children doesn't necessarily sync up with that and may actually undermine that goal. Whereas blue collar people tend to care more about legacy and the maintenance of traditions.

I personally don't want to have kids and I'm an outlier amongst my family, my folks look at me like I'm crazy. A part of it is not having the innate desire to have children, and then looking at the financial costs of what I would probably have to spend to raise my kids and put them in a position to surpass me academically/financially. Films like American Promise and Class Divide showcase how difficult it is to compete in a major city against these yuppies.

The incentives are there to not have children.

I have many friends who are married... a few married for 5+ years (got married in early 20s) and they still don't have kids. The financial cost and the lack of leave time is real.

I'm 29, no kids, not married. My parents really are hinting that I gotta get on that, they want grand kids.

Don't forget autism is expected to "hit" 1/2 boys by 2025...(remember we just happen to diagnosis it better).....:scust:
Unless, we quickly establish robots that can take care of elderly, we almost have no choice but to open the borders, because abortion, women controlling their bodies, and contraceptives is reducing number of young people to take care of the old.

Pretty much this. It's not surprising that with the substantial changes in social-economic terms (increasing imputs for your children's economic success, technology, medical innovations) that birthrates are trending down in every developed western-style country.

The real question is how the traditional economic model is going to continue when the most fundamental portion of growth based output (ie people) is going to continue to decline IMO.

I don’t think population is the issue. Consumption levels are more so the issue (which of course population growth drives).
