US hospitals are so overloaded that one ER called 911 on itself

Polio has a mortality rate of 15-30% in adults.
Smallpox has a mortality rate of 30-50% in adults
COVID has a 3.0 mortality rate.

which ones are more essential? :stopitslime:

In the 10 years before the polio vaccine vaccine was rolled out, annual polio deaths in the USA ranged from a low of 580 to a high of 3,200.

Compare that to over a MILLION people dying of Covid the last three years. Covid vaccines were far more essential than polio vaccines.

Your mortality rate claims for polio are based on hospitalized cases only. They're meaningless for comparison because the vast majority of people infected (at least 95%, even higher in adults) are asymptomatic or have very minor symptoms.

In most people with a normal immune system, a poliovirus infection is asymptomatic [70%]. In about 25% of cases, the infection produces minor symptoms which may include sore throat and low fever.[3] These symptoms are temporary and full recovery occurs within one or two weeks.[1][3]

In about 1 percent of infections the virus can migrate from the gastrointestinal tract into the central nervous system (CNS).[1] Most patients with CNS involvement develop nonparalytic aseptic meningitis, with symptoms of headache, neck, back, abdominal and extremity pain, fever, vomiting, stomach pain, lethargy, and irritability.[13][14][15] About one to five in 1000 cases progress to paralytic disease, in which the muscles become weak, floppy and poorly controlled, and, finally, completely paralyzed; this condition is known as acute flaccid paralysis.[16] The weakness most often involves the legs, but may less commonly involve the muscles of the head, neck, and diaphragm.[1] Depending on the site of paralysis, paralytic poliomyelitis is classified as spinal, bulbar, or bulbospinal. In those who develop paralysis, between 2 and 10 percent die as the paralysis affects the breathing muscles.[3]

So only 0.1-0.5% of those infected with polio developed paralysis, and less than 10% of those who were paralyzed died. Fatality rate of less than one tenth of one percent.

this is what happens when the "free" market is left to its own devices...
Healthcare and free market does not coexist, Im telling people our healthcare system is going to suffer big at the rate it’s going. All it takes is a couple of hospitals to shutdown in a region.
IMO This has been the worst times to work in the hospitals within my lifetime.

Doesn’t help that the 911 system is severely abused/misused in most cases

I’m a EMT. Can’t tell you how many people we transport to ERs for minor headaches, a cough, stomach pain, back pain, sore throat

17 year old called 911 for a literally a paper cut on his toe the other night:francis: We have him a bandaid and bounced with the quickness

Meanwhile while we’re tending to him, it could be a family trapped in a burning building or a rollover car crash

People will sit in the ER for hours for something you could go to an urgent care or docs office for.
