US warplanes carried out air strikes on positions of the Islamic State (IS) group in the Libyan city of Sirte for the first time on Monday, the Pentagon and Libya's unity government announced.
"The first American air strikes on precise positions of the Daesh organisation were carried out today, causing heavy losses... in Sirte," Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj said in a televised speech, using an Arabic term to refer to the IS group.

In Washington, the Pentagon said the raids were launched in response to a request from the unity government.

"At the request of the Libyan Government of National Accord, the United States military conducted precision air strikes against ISIL targets in Sirte, Libya, to support GNA-affiliated forces seeking to defeat ISIL in its primary stronghold in Libya," Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said, using another name for the IS group.

The Tripoli-based GNA launched an operation in May to retake the IS group bastion of Sirte, the hometown of slain dictator Muammar Gaddafi, which the jihadists have controlled since June 2015.

Losing Sirte, 450 kilometres (280 miles) east of Tripoli, would be a major blow to the jihadist group, which has also faced a series of setbacks in Syria and Iraq.

The battle for Sirte has killed around 280 pro-government fighters and wounded more than 1,500, according to medical sources at the unity forces' command centre.

The pro-GNA forces are mostly made up of militias from western Libya established during the 2011 revolt that overthrew Gaddafi.

A militia set up to guard the country's main oil facilities has also been advancing on IS group positions.

The GNA was the result of a UN-brokered power-sharing agreement struck in December, but it has yet to be endorsed by Libya's elected parliament based in the country's far east.

I see you Mr. CIA. Thank you for your service...i guess...

Im becoming very skeptical of this ISIS narrative. Its like its code for Arabs we dont like. That aside, when do middle easterners take responsibility for their own security?:jbhmm:

This Clinton presidency really is gonna be something!:pachaha:
Whenever a leader tries to deal with problems the west started (historically), instigated or blaitently fuelled - they become a Gaddafi, Hussein or Assad

US foreign policy in a nutshell, but Trump is the crazy one :coffee:

Uh, he's the crazy one because he said we SHOULD go after Ghaddafi, and now just lies about it and makes up a new position to fit the moment:

And thanks to BuzzFeed, we have the video. (All the hat tips to Andrew Kaczynski.)

It comes from 2011, on Trump’s video blog.

"I can’t believe what our country is doing," Trump said, according to a BuzzFeed transcript. "Gaddafi in Libya is killing thousands of people, nobody knows how bad it is, and we’re sitting around we have soldiers all have the Middle East, and we’re not bringing them in to stop this horrible carnage and that’s what it is: It’s a carnage."

Trump continued.

"You talk about things that have happened in history; this could be one of the worst," Trump said. "Now we should go in, we should stop this guy, which would be very easy and very quick. We could do it surgically, stop him from doing it, and save these lives. This is absolutely nuts. We don’t want to get involved and you’re gonna end up with something like you’ve never seen before."

And then ...

"But we have go in to save these lives; these people are being slaughtered like animals," Trump said. "It’s horrible what’s going on; it has to be stopped. We should do on a humanitarian basis, immediately go into Libya, knock this guy out very quickly, very surgically, very effectively, and save the lives."
