MANILA (Reuters) - Police in the Philippines filed murder charges on Wednesday against a U.S. Marine over the death of a transgender Filipino he met in a bar outside the former U.S. naval base of Subic Bay.

The Philippine government also wants to take custody of Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton while he stands trial, said a senior Philippine official, who warned that the case could damage military ties between the allies.

"Based on two witnesses' testimonies, we believe we have a strong case against the U.S. Marine," said Pedrito delos Reyes, police chief of Olongapo City, where the body of Jeffrey Laude, 26, was found in a hotel room on Saturday.

I know when I was in Korea, (wasn't really a tranny problem)... but the young Soldiers would get married to the "drinky" girls - girls who were caught up in the sex traffic trade who worked at the local bars that where outside of the camps. You mix alcohol with Soldiers having to beat off (no punn) other Soldiers from drooling over their wives, causes a lot of issues. If the Soldier committed a crime in Korea, the US deals with it - under the SOFA (status of forces agreement) act.

Really? Why not just release them to the local PD?

Because the Soldier would fall under the criminal justice system of South Korea, they're crimes and punishments are much different than ours. Same thing in Iraq - if Soldier, for instance, raped a woman - most likely, the Soldier would go through a super-duper trial and get hanged the next day - or worse.

We protect our own.

Yes. Check it - in the US, if the Solider committed a crime off post - he gets double jeporady. He's punished under civilian and military law.

Also, yes - the Soldier will fall under the same crime, but the punishments is dealt within our system instead.

That is unfortunate. The guy shouldn't have killed him, but the tranny was partially responsible if he tricked the marine.
