Isn't it because NATO is a great tool to project soft power? Allies will buy your planes, tanks, equipment and in general show willingness for lucrative trade deals + align with American interests on international stage? Let's also not forget that European lives were lost fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. I'm sure that most Europeans didn't know wtf Kabul was either. Still we helped. And with Ukraine America gave security guarantees as stated in the Budapest Memorandum. So I'd say that there probably are some reasons, but I'm not an expert.
