Sony patent DRM using RF tags to bypass online connectivity. No PS4 trade ins? | PS4 News | Official PlayStation Magazine

I got a feeling people are going to get excited buy the system and then be like wait a minute. Remember when the ps3 took away support for 3rd party stuff.

This was brought up a few months ago to Yoshida. He said they aren't using it.

However, I do see it coming for the PS5 possibly. That will definitely be the last system where you can probably use physical media. Hopefully the rest of the planet will catch up by then with internet infrastructure.

The Passage of Time
Sony reiterates any DRM on used games will be left up to the publisher | VG247

According to Dan Race, senior director, corporate communications for Sony, Tretton’s statements were “referring specifically to playing used games online”

“The Online Pass program for PlayStation first-party games will not continue on PlayStation 4,” eh said. “Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games.

“When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever.”

So there you go. Hope that clears it all up.

That's a big difference from what was said at the reveal.

NO DRM is a far cry from "we'll let the publishers decide"

The publishers decide the used game restrictions on Xbox one as well, so what's the difference?

Actually M$ is deciding the used game restrictions for Xbox1, not publishers. Third party publishers aren't saying that you can't loan your game to your friend unless they have been on your FL for 30 days...thats M$. Third party publishers aren't saying you can only resell your game to approved vendors...M$ does. Publishers aren't going to turn off your XB1 if you haven't done your daily online DRM check-in wit M$.

Thats the difference.

PS4 will have the exact same policy as PS3.

No you didn't read it right. Those are microsofts restrictions as a publisher. But other publishers will be able to decide and set their own restrictions or not.

The daily check in is because Xbox one games are played directly off the hardrive. So the check is there to make sure you have not installed your game on multiple differnt machines.

the difference are the publishers. 2 of the 3 major publishers aren't using drm right now and ea literally just got rid of it's drm.
