People are seeing Facebook isn't the 'fun and games, innocent place they thought': Roger McNamee

After a 7% slide in Facebooks share price over the weekend alot more people are taking a look at some of the ethical dilemmas that are being brought into the light.

Put simply, Facebook has been treating users as more of a commodity to be leveraged instead of as consumers of a product. To Facebook, the User IS the product that they then sell to other media entities and big data / Advertising firms

While the incident that started this wave was a political one (Cambridge Analytica/Steve Bannon) it begs the question of "How prevalent was the practice of selling user data, and what parties have been using this service of Facebook."

From political campaigns to targeted advertisement, the whole method of selling users interest / taste to 3rd party marketers is very predatory in nature

this is pretty much the whole internet nowadays. Everything is tracking you, especially google. Most sites have some form of google analytics embedded. Facebook, Twitter, instagram... all of these companies are collecting and storing your data and I'm sure submitting it to the government for analysis upon request.

Would netflix viewing patterns / other media consumption (time spent on phone. ect.) be out of the question as far as valuable information that could be sold to 3rd parties?

That occurring would go against the thinking of "If its a free product expect no privacy"

Phones are pretty much portable spy devices. . I'm sure netflix sells your data too. I wouldn't be surprised that these tvs with these cameras on top eventually start recording your face and see how you react to certain scenes in movies and news to further their predictive analytics on you.

Facebook was always suspect to me...

What had immediately turned me away was their TOS agreement where they explicitly state they do not delete your data from their servers...

Why would you not delete my data if I delete my account?

The answer is obvious when you consider what Facebook is,

Facebook is not the product, its a data mining tool...

You the user are the product...

Did people not know all this? Why do you think Facebook asks fo all your interests and contacts? That’s why websites all partner with websites like Facebook, google, and Yahoo. Everything you hit a partner website, they sell back your browsing habits and build up your profile. That’show ads follow you all over the internet on different websites.

OT I got google fiber and I think they sell my browsing habits and even when I turn on the TV. I’ve noticed a few times I get home and a couple seconds after I get settled in and turn on the TV I get a robocall.

Yeah, the media is years late on this. I guess they're finding out social media is going to turn them into the dinosaurs :francis:

Like everyone else said, you can presume that pretty Much whatever online accounts you have that data is being bought and sold like hot cakes.
