As I've said before, you can tell that it's a psychological thing by how mad some people get when you DARE to suggest that maybe people should reconsider the use of the word. It's one thing to use a word, it's another to use a word with that history and then get indignant when people have an issue with it. They won't have any other word in their vocabulary that they feel that protective of, and the fact that its' a slur meant to dehumanize black people is pretty sad. A lot of these types will get mad when white people sing along to their favorite rap song (as if it's not the fault of rappers using the word in songs they KNOW will be listened to by all kinds of people), but then disrespect black people who don't want it used around them. And again, no other group uses a slur in such a widespread manner and then allows other groups to do so. In NYC, Asians, Latinos use it but just let a black person call them "my ch*nk" or "my sp*c" and see what happens.

:martin:

He was just calling Scarface “a shellfish ass nikka” after Scarface performed at the grammys.
Willie let the first two “nikkas” slide, then felt a barrage of “nikkas” coming after the third one and had to pause :dame:

As an ethnic group? Sure.
But the term "black" was not something that any of our ancestors would have understood or identified as.

The term black has just as much, if not more destructive history considering we were given that term by European colonizers who had no good intentions with that characterization.

Yet, we adopted it. We normalized it.

Logically, if the reason we should have issue with nikka is because of the history; the same logic should apply with black.

I'm proud to call myself black by the way.

I've discussed this numerous times on the Coli - my previous post about it

The bolded is exactly what I thought you'd say.

You realize our pre-colonial ancestors, if resurrected, would not understand you if you asked them if they are black, right?

Black was not a classification created by our ancestors. Black, as an identifying term, was created by Europeans who wanted to justify their oppressive actions by painting these darker pigmented people from Africa as "other".

The whole purpose of calling us "black" for the first time was devious and an evil attempt to look at us as inferior.

Yet, today, you and I have no qualms about being proud to be "black".

The word nikka comes from the negative word ******, yet, our cultural use of nikka is something that follows a similar cultural adoption of black.

Thoughts?

did y’all watch his extended explanation?

He does use the word, when he wants to be derogatory. And when he uses the word he thinks of it in its ‘original’ literal sense.

To me that is worse.

If you really believe “n-“ is degrading to black people….you should never use it. And you never should think of your own people in such a way. To believe that there are black people that are “n-ers”, weaponize it against other black people you’re upset/annoyed and in the next breath criticize black people who use it in the same way they say “fukk” has always been confusing to me.

Yes, they would and did. Just as they understood what 'n1gger' meant.

Read Slave narratives.
Wait... I'm sorry.

With all due respect, I meant our ancestors who had no interaction with Europeans.

Pre-colonial africa did not have Africans looking at each other and calling themselves "black".

The term black originated from the foul mouth of europeans looking to dehumanize and subjugate us.

We adopted black as an identifying term AFTER it being beaten into us through oppressive laws and verbalal abuse.

I've discussed this isse numerous times on the Coli - my previous post about it

The identity of formerly enslaved people is something that has always been unsettled in this nation, when I was younger, we were "Afro Americans", we've collectively settled on Black to identify as at this point in time.

You're proud to call yourself Black, are you proud to call yourself a n*gga?

Wait... I'm sorry.

With a due respect, Inmeant our ancestors who had no interaction with europeans.
They referred to each other by tribe/religious affiliation/region. Black is OUR 'tribe' since we lost all connection to them.

We have different culture, values, philosophies, languages, etc., than Zulu, Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, etc. due to diverging histories from 400+ years of separation.

'Black' isn't ONLY derogatory regardless as to how Europeans used it.

'N1gger/n1gga' is and always will be.
