LeBron: 'Valuable' in MVP open to interpretation

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- LeBron James won't debate whether Golden State's Stephen Curry should be the NBA's MVP this season. That's indisputable.

But James might argue about how the award's name should be defined.

One day after Curry was voted the first unanimous winner in 61 years, James, who finished third behind Curry and San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard, said the honor can be interpreted in different ways.

"I think sometimes the word 'valuable' or best player of the year you can have different results," said James, a four-time MVP. "You know, that's not taking anything from anyone that's ever won the award."

Curry is the 11th player in league history to be voted MVP in consecutive seasons and the first to do so since James did it in 2012 and 2013. The Warriors' backcourt wizard is also the first guard to do it since Phoenix's Steve Nash in 2005 and 2006.

James, who averaged 25.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists during the regular season, was awed by Curry's shooting prowess.

"Look at Steph's numbers," he said. "He averaged 30, he led the league in steals, he was 90-50-40 [shooting percentages from the free throw line, field and beyond the 3-point line] and they won 73 [games]. So, I don't -- do you have any debate over that, really, when it comes to that award? But when you talk about most 'valuable,' then you can have a different conversation, so, take nothing away from him, he's definitely deserving of that award, for sure."

Coincidentally, James and Curry are both from Akron, Ohio. They were born in the same hospital 39 months apart.

Value is the guy that broke the NBA record for wins. Something LeBron couldn't do.. value is someone that brings a championship to his city, not forming a super team to win a championship. Value is someone that makes his team better not someone who constantly says he needs help.. LeBron should shut his overrated ass up because we're witnessing greatness. I've never seen a player like curry..
What the fukk :heh:

From a post yesterday about the MVP:

My take on this whole thing is that MVP is a league wide award, not a team based award. So yes, LeBron is likely the MVP when you're looking at what a team could do without their best player.

But the NBA's MVP should go to someone who is bringing the most value to the LEAGUE (not just their team)...which is often/always? (arguably) the best basketball player. Because that 'best player' is bringing in additional fans/revenue to the LEAGUE.

And that person this year is unquestionably Steph...hell, he's got Under Armour shoes outselling LeBron's Nike shoes (!!!)...he is bringing revenue/recognition/new fans/casual fans to the league where they might not have without someone doing things no one else has done before...

Again, just my take (and obviously I am heavily biased toward Steph...)

ok so Lebron answers the question with an intelligent and thoughtful response, also clearly congratulates Curry repeatedly, emphasizes that he agrees that Curry deserves the award, but wants to promote a discussion on the exact criteria of the MVP award

and everyone in this thread ignores all that and just jumps to the conclusion he's salty and jealous of Curry :snoop:
Exactly

Dumb nikkas.

again lebron is correct, there is no clear criteria to who wins MVP. We seen 3 different criterias for winning MVP

best player on the best team - 16 Curry, 07 Dirk 93 Barkley

most valuable player (team success with or without said player) 2009 Lebron,2005 and 2006 Nash etc...

best player in the league - 81 moses malone (won mvp in spite of his team winning 40 games, same with 75 kareem) all of Jordan's mvps, 84-86 bird, 87 magic, 12 & 13 lebron, 00 shaq

The reason the award is the Most VALUABLE Person, is because value is subjective and leaves room for opinion and debate.

If the award was just for the best/most popular player on the most successful team, then there would never be any debate and no reason to have a vote.

Curry definitely deserves the award, he had an MVP worthy season.

But the fact that not one of the voters made the case for one of the other players that had great seasons and brought great value to their team, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't agree that the NBA itself is watered down. But the media surrounding it is. All hype, and everybody is afraid to have a differing opinion

Currys 2016 check marks all of the seasons listed above.

I waited all day for this thread to pop up. Coli never fails me :francis:
yep...

But the bullshyt starts with the gossip site known as ESPN.

They made a full top page article out of Bron stating the SAME THING virtually everybody says about the MVP award, like he said something controversial, offensive, or outside the box. :snoop:

Anything for site clicks i guess.

I hate modern day "sports media" :pacspit:

The 2013 Heat and 2000 Lakers were the best team :dahell:. They won 66 and 67 games respectively

lebron and shaq were also the most irreplaceable players in the league as well. Nothing is perfect it's always a combination of things
