Vegeta wasn't challenged by Cell so he wasn't really fighting just for the thrill of the fight. There was no threat so there was no survival aspect. And eventually Vegeta would have killed Cell had he not become perfect. Goku on the other hand would have let cell live so that they could be sparing partners some day.
