I lived it in Ex-Yugoslavia till I was 13.
It worked when you could travel both west and east.

It worked when all companies were cooperatives.

Yeah, even China ditched socialism years ago. They would likely not be an economic powerhouse if they kept up Maoism or anything close to it.
