Jets quarterback Michael Vick knows he’s far from the only running quarterback in the NFL these days, but he wants to be remembered as the one who started the trend toward quarterbacks who can beat defenses with their legs as well as their arms.

“I was the guy who started it all,” Vick told ESPN.com. “I revolutionized the game. I changed the way it was played in the NFL.”

It’s not quite correct to say that Vick started it all: Although Vick is the NFL’s all-time leader in rushing yards for a quarterback (5,857) and yards per carry (7.1), there were other good running quarterbacks before Vick came along, including Bobby Douglass, Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb. But whether he was the one who started it all or not, Vick has a lot to be proud of.

“The things I’ve done, I’ve pretty much surpassed myself and expectations — over 25,000 yards in total offense in the NFL, and I missed a lot of years and a lot of games,” he said. “That’s more the reason I have to keep it going.”

delusions of grander perhaps? :mjlol:

He ain't wrong though. Defensive coordinators used to believe that in the worst possible case scenario they'd have to designate a player to watch the QB every once in a while. Then it had to be a LB. Then it had to be a freak athlete. Then they had to draft guys just for it. Then they had to redesign their entire defense just for one game. Then they had to save a spot on their roster for running backs and WRs as their scout team QBs.

Then people other than Vick started taking off outchea :sas1:

Dude made it happen. Changed the game. Now all of a sudden offensive coordinators don't like pocket passers as much because it means that they'll be looking at 11 defenders instead of 10. Gotta give Vick his props. Him taking off and styling on dudes was the NFL's equivalent to the introduction of the 3pt line.

Let that man cook. :salute:

Cunningham just scrambled. when vick came in the designed the offense around him running. that led to the read option era.
Yeah. Outside of MAYBE Young, guys weren't scrambling and destroying teams basically solo within a complex offense - and you can't say Young was ever in the same category because he was surrounded by talent.

A lot of scrambling QBs in the past would simply take off on you from time to time. With Vick, you had to treat every single down like he'd go 50 on you.

Young was even harder to cover because not only could he burn you with his feet, but he was highly intelligent and could torch you with his arm. Vick could never put it all together. Blame Reeves for not grooming him properly.

Vick's best receiver for the majority of his career was Crumpler :beli:

Young was literally surrounded by Hall of Famers. The fact that Vick's best tools were his feet and his arm were what led to that offense fundamentally changing how scrambling QBs are used today. Necessity being the mother of invention and all that good stuff.

I do agree with you though.
