stated paper copies aren’t recognized when you are in a bind and can’t get to your passport or card. You SHOULD check in with your embassy whenever you travel. If shyt goes down, they know you are in town and will alert you. Virtual SIM cards are a thing if you don’t want to use your cell service and burn money. Pocket WiFi is a thing as well.
Using USD in some countries isn’t too wise neither. Exchange money whenever you can. It’s cheaper too because of the rates given in some countries isn’t great. I was in Mexico once when it was 15 to one and every vendor only exchanged up to 10 pesos. Here in Japan, it’s 155 to one and vendor honor 150.
I’ve had to pay off cops in Mexico and Belize. I’ve been searched in Thailand four times. Jamaican police wanted me to throw them some cash as well so you can take that into consideration. Remember you can always say no, but $20 isn’t bad to throw them.

The lady was dumb for fighting a guy with a knife. The guy should have jumped in and disarmed the guy when it was obvious he was mostly interested in robbing them and not actually using the knife. Can't be this naive traveling to 3rd world countries.
