It's not too late, but there is a lot of competition out there.

Like with everything else, just make sure it is something you are very passionate about. It might not necessarily turn into millions of dollars, but you will get an audience if you keep working at it for a year or two. You won't make much money starting out either. It took Marques Brownlee about 7 years to get to where he is, there are no shortcuts.

Focus on QUALITY, not QUANTITY.

I did some research a few months ago and learned the popular youtubers will have a management team they are signed to. They help promote the channel and make things more appealing to the audience.
