Not saying one shouldn't defend themselves, but honestly sounds reminiscent of the Zimmerman argument or cops fearing for their lives, and starts unloading. Not saying they are completely analogous but similarity threshold is met.
@Booksnrain is speaking from a female standpoint, so I would definitely encourage to carry.
HOWEVER, understand that a long list of things can happen once you reach for the pistol, man or woman.
It can go left very very quickly for everyone in a 12 foot radius.
Call me crazy, but if I were to get one, I would want to run drills weekly. Getting robbed, sucker punched, another bystander decides to be a hero too etc.
Just to be a little more prepared than me just going to the range and hitting a target.
