CA self defense law requires a reasonable belief of imminent great bodily harm. He just got done fighting someone. He is hype as hell off adrenaline. He was threatened with stabbing, and while he has his weapon drawn, the shoplifter suddenly moves towards him quickly. Keep in mind, someone at that distance can reach him in less than half a second.

Add to it that both subjects are Black, and there's no evidence the guard even knew the shoplifter was trans. There's less political pressure. It's no wonder he wasn't charged.
