They probably were the one at that moment he was out with them. Some guys (and gals) are players and some guys (and gals) are too clumsy in social situations to know how to keep the opposite sex at bay until any potential relationship was clear to all parties; so they fake it. It is probably not fair to the faked out party, but that is the price of laying cards on the table and not being sure that the other party feels the same way.

Since he wasn't married to any of them then they really didn't have any rights to being possessive; so if they thought that he was playing them and they didn't like it; then all they had to do was just walk away. There was no point of even bringing any of the crap to his attention if he already knew what he was doing and that the other person would not like it.
