Crash would've been as big as Sonic. Edit - Or maybe he was :patrice:

Unfortunately, while Sonic was literally the console mascot for Sony with all the strategic branding, priority and outside media synergy that comes with it... Crash was a 3rd party IP masquerading as Sony's mascot. He was always on borrowed time, once it was time for Naughty Dog to move on to other properties.

However, units sold:

Crash (Sony)
  • Crash 1 - 6.8 million
  • Crash 2 - 7.5 million
  • Crash 3 - 6 million
  • Crash Team Racing - 2.2 million
Sonic (Sega)
  • Sonic 1 - *15 million (*most of these were bundled with the Genesis)
  • Sonic 2 - 7.55 million
  • Sonic 3 - 1 million
  • Sonic & Knuckles - 3 million
  • Sonic Adventure 1 - 2.5 million
  • Sonic Adventure 2 - 2 million (500k on Dreamcast)

Crash was also a major hit in Japan and even spots like Saudi Arabia had Crash themed restaurants. A number of us thought he was Sony's official mascot.

Warhammer Space Marine series is vastly overrated and the lore is very surface level storytelling

Playstation fell off after ps4

Marvel Rivals is broken and uses EOMM

games releases in 2011-2017 >>>>> next gen games

- ARPGS (diablo, POE etc) are inherently poor game games that are held together by their addictive nature and offer very little else when you get down to it because unless you are deleting the entire screen over and over with a couple button presses you are going to die. Its a minmax sim

- Nintendo has been a shyt company for decades and every lauded game they release you can reliably subtract like 15 points from its MC score to get its actual rating.

- Roguelikes are a lazy genre

- Expedition, while relatively new shyts on 99% of jrpgs released ever.

- Baldurs gate 3 is possibly the most overrated game ever. It used to be TW3 but that shyt took the crown and ran with it. Game is a chore to play and even beyond the chars are largely just a bunch of cliches and uninteresting.

GTA hasn't been compelling since San Andreas

If you buy NBA 2k every year you are a retard, sorry.

yea the gta series has been riding on the glory of 3 and Andreas

vice city was great but it didn't have the impact of the aforementioned ...

been a pronounced downward spiral since ... went from countercultural to commercial
and sterile

i dont expect much of this new Gta... even after all these years im anticipating it being akin to the last one smh

and lol at the 2k comment... i agree with that too

7th Console Generation (360, ps3, wii) is better than the 6th console generation (ps2, gamecube, dreamcast, xbox)

i remember 7th generation specifically because of how poorly Madden transitioned to those systems

it feels like that was the exact point where madden got wack and never recovered ...

if theres some counter points im curious

This seems to be more about games, than the business.

Fortnite is at worst the 9th greatest video games of all-time when you take into account all the things games get judged by on the GOAT scale.

Talk that talk

It’s very arguable cause Fortnite is actually a very solid game lol

Well it definitely wasn't for madden.

The 7th generation saw online play pretty much perfected. Yes it existed the previous generation but we all know it wasn't a smooth experience. This generation pretty much cemented the online experience as a cornerstone of gaming.

The generation offered true HD graphics. (except Nintendo). The full integration of consoles with other media platforms saw this generation turn our consoles into one stop entertainment boxes.

For better or worse, the Wii's motion controls got gaming to be a fun experience for everyone in the family. Love it or hate it, those things were everywhere.

Then there were the games. We saw the introduction of critically acclaimed and or sales juggernaut franchises such as Uncharted, Bioshock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, the Last of Us, Arkham series, Infamous, Boderlands, Resistance, Dragon Age, Dead Space, Souls series and Assassin's Creed.

Then we got critically rated sequels, to already established franchises. In some cases these games were arguably the best in their franchise. Games like Modern Warfare, New Super Mario Bros. Black Ops, Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, 2K11, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Street Fighter 4, Rainbow Six Vegas, Fallout 3 & Vegas, Half-Life 2 episodes 1&2, Netherrealm's Mortal Kombat reboot, GTA 4 & 5, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid 4 etc etc

The 6th generation was definitely more innovative but imo the 7th generation took those innovations and perfected them. The majority of those games still hold up extremely well today. Its hard goin back to some of those clunky controls and graphics from the 6th generation if we're being honest.

i never really picked up online gaming personally but that generation definitely set the tone for what it is now. it cleaned up online gaming and made it a standard of gaming rather than a niche

the wii was a revolutionary explosion... and it fell off as fast as it blew up... Wonder why... wack software?

very strong titles introduced... alot of which endure till this day

the expansion of graphics and the possibilities of gameplay from that generation was substantial as well. it was a worthwhile upgrade. much moreso than this current iteration.. there isnt anything there to meaningfully separate ps5 from ps4 (to me at least) i havent dealt with the new xboxes. the switch is the switch lol

great post thank you

in an earlier draft i actually called out Sega, Namco, and Capcom specifically for this.

I remember being :wow: at the music in Ridge Racer 1. You could disc swap to play your music which was incredible but the stock Ridge Racer music was low key incredible.
So of that era's techno

this shyt belongs in a Blade movie lol

:banderas: my favorite

R4 they went deeper house and smoother, which matched the vibe of that game and the era

R4 low key has one of the best soundtracks in gaming history

I'm at my desk listening to the R4 sdtk and it's legitimately way better than I remembered. Like, all time house music shyt. I would nominate it on a goat oat list.

I want to re-play R4. So my question as someone with a working PSX, PS2 and PS3, would it behoove me to do one of the following:

  • Find a original copy of R4
  • Get a copy of R7 for PS3 (is it as good? Or stupidly challenging)
  • Get R6 for Xbox
  • Play a different version of ridge racer

You make a great point. The leap between the 6th to the 7th generation was probably the last real noticeable and substantial technical leap we've seen in gaming.

The 9th generation of consoles are still struggling to consistently give us 60fps and 4k so besides faster loading times is there any noticeable difference between the 8th and 9th generation? The fact that so many games are still releasing on last gen hardware tells you everything you need to know. (Are we still using covid as an excuse?)

That's one of the reasons why I'm so fond of the 7th generation. There was a noticeable leap in gameplay and graphics.

Also every game didn't have to be a one hundred hour open world sludge fest. We still got tons of focused and linear single player games.

Games were mostly released in their finished form. Street fighter 4 you had to beat the game to unlock the hidden characters. (Capcom did go on their bs with releasing multiple versions of the game.)

Admittedly that generation for better or worse made dlc mainstream as well began nickel and diming consumers via micro transactions. So it wasn't all good.

But considering its a generation that launched roughly 20 years ago, the games still hold up extremely well today.some of those games still haven't been equaled or surpassed.

I don't think I've played and enjoyed a single metrovania since SOTN. Hollowknight, deadcell, and nine-souls I've bounced off of all of them. This side scroll we won't tell you where to go even though 99% of the rooms all look the same is a terrible genre. Combat is extremely limited due to the nature and the lack of any sort of narrative is appalling.

Soulslikes are better than character action titles like DMC/NG etc. At least they embrace the simplicity and offer a challenge. Juggling one enemy in the air for 2 minutes is probably fun the first 4-5 times you do it after that you realize you've been pressing X the whole time against a bunch of easy enemies in a game built for 12 year olds.

Sports games have completely lost the plot in all the ways.

I feel like as the heavy gamer generation gets older the games have to catch up. This infantilizing and tutorializing every fukking system in the game needs to stop. I'm at the point where just drop me in some shyt which a clear goal in mind and I'll figure the mechanics out on my own. Learning a new ability and instantly getting a popup with some over explanation about the shyt followed up by a couple of doll enemies asking you to use the new ability 10 times or some goofy shyt is too much. These games aren't that intensive for all this shyt.

Also last two things. Escort missions need to burn in hell. I don't know if this qualifies as an escort mission but you know the missions where you are talking with a npc and you have control but you don't have full control and your running half speed because they disabled the sprint button so you can be locked in some conversation that is mostly immaterial? Yeah nah fukk all that(a SONY game special). I abhor this shyt.
