I finally watched this Monday. It was good. Viola Davis and Chadwick were great. And the phrase "aint nobody stuttin (studyin...or however you spell it)" was one of those authentic things that we say in my family. It wasn't that romanticized language that people like to force into period pieces with black folks. Like yeah nikkas actually said "nikkas" back then before rap. That dude Strand from Fear:The Walking Dead (that's how i know of him...lol) was good too. Underrated supporting actor.
People still use that phrase

Watched the movie the other night and everyone involved in the movie did a great job. I hope the film will get recognized during the award season.

Man this was emotional as fukk. Helluva last performance from Chadwick and that ending :wow:

went in not knowing what to expect but loved that they kept it similar to a play style (didn’t know it was based on a play until we started and my girl told me).

It's good but not great. I could see it being phenomenal in its stage play form but it needed something extra film wise. Would've liked to have seen the more pleasant side to Ma Rainey a bit more. She was pretty much an a$$hole throughout. Chadwick overacted a bit but much love to the brotha. I enjoyed it though

I was expecting this to be a biography of her instead of them recording that song.

Some of the dialogue was a little too long but I still enjoyed it. I was watching it with my homegirl last night & she didn’t know the history of Ma Rainey..I told her she was like Meg The Stallion of the 20s :pachaha:

I wished they would have played “Prove It On Me” & “Booze & Blues“

Hoping for more blue artists movies down the line

The headline should have said starring Chadwick Boseman and featuring Viola Davis cause taking nothing away from her performance which was great but Chadwick played this role with all his heart i feel and he deserves awards for this performance even if he ain't here to enjoy it. For years we looked for the next Denzel or Will. And while cats like Idris MJ Trevante and Majors are great this man was in a class of his own and i hate that it took me viewing his other movies a second time to realize that.

Watched the movie again
I liked it better on second watch
Still it’s something missing can’t put my finger on it
Chadwick and Viola should get all the awards

Finally watched it. I enjoyed it. Chadwick looked so young in this :wow:

Ending seemed a little forced, but I get what it was saying and that is very true.

Because I have seen and read the play and am aware of exactly what you are referencing. So unless it became a graphic sex scene, your post is bullshyt.

Question for you and those who have seen/read the play: did the characters say “nikka” in the play as much as they did in the movie? That was the only thing that struck me as odd. I didn’t think Black folk used that word as much back then.
