Nintendo to Announce Virtual Boy 2
Legendary for all the wrong reasons, the Virtual Boy is about to make a triumphant comeback on the back of the NX.
The cat suit is out of the pipe. Nintendo has officially announced its next console and the NX – as it is currently known – is just about the hottest topic in gaming right now. News on the console is scarce, with speculation rife as fans and critics across the globe jump up, down and over green shells in excitement. What we know for sure is that the NX will be publically revealed in 2016, that your gamer profile will transcend across other formats (Wii U, 3DS and mobile), and that it will feature a brand-new concept (read: gimmick) of some kind.
So let us speculate, too.
After 20-years in purgatory, one of gaming’s most heavily ridiculed peripherals of all time – the Virtual Boy – will be making a comeback. Yes gamers, the Virtual Boy 2 is set to be announced by Nintendo.
Of course it is! Let’s look at the state of the market. Valve is releasing the Vive virtual reality headset in late 2015; Sony’s Project Morpheus is locked and loaded for Q1 2016; and Microsoft is working on the HoloLens, while leaving the door wide open to a VR specific headset in the future. So the NX’s three biggest competitors for a spot in the lounge room are all going in on virtual reality big time.
Do you really think that Nintendo - the console pioneers of virtual reality who walked the walk way back in 1995 when the video tape was a thing – are going to let that scene go untapped? Of course not game fans. The resurrection is on; the boy will be back. Hyrule here I come!
