Krishna being blue predates British colonialism by many many centuries.
In classical Hindu art, blue symbolizes divinity, infinity, and cosmic energy, Vishnu and Shiva also blue. The blue hue is to portray god's divine or spiritual nature rather than a literal skin tone.

A hindu god being blue does not mean hindus believe the skin of god is blue, it's not meant to be taken literally.
Also many hindu deities drank some type of poison that demons gave them that turned them blue as well.
