It's a fact that Beyonce has the the more resonant voice and showcases development and proficiency in every register of her range, which is roughly 4 octaves today.

Didn't she use 5 in "Love On Top"?

:manny:Lauren Hill.. Beyonce a great performer but she aint seeing Hill tho.

Toni sexy ass always sounded like a black Jessica Rabbit to me. Her voice is like a more mellow version of Whitney's but in a lower range, very sultry. Lauryn's voice is more earthy like her image. This is a hard one but I'm still giving Lauryn the edge because other than Jazmin Sullivan I have not heard anybody sound like her.
:wow: You should listening to Tish Hyman.. ol girl got that old soul talent

The better question would be Beyonce or Jazmine Sullivan. :jbhmm:
Bey has more range the Jazmine but Jazmine's voice/tone is so distinct and has so much character that her limited range doesn't matter. People will most likely say Beyonce is better than Jazzy because she can hit notes above C6 and they believe what makes a great vocalist is how high they can go on the scale.

I think range is not a true be all end all when it comes to vocal ability. Mariah Carey and Minnie Ripperton can all sing in the whistle register and while Mariah is a great vocalist in the vain of Whitney Houston, I wouldn't consider her a better vocalist than say Aretha or even Beyonce because the latter have more vocal control and that's saying something because Mariah is a top 10 female vocalist of all time.

Lauryn Hill,

but the Beyonce disrespect is crazy, she is 'technically' a terrific singer, although Lauryn has more layers to her sound, if that makes any sense.

I'm not as knowledgeable as you on the intricacies of voice, but I agree. Bey is better at the technicals but Lauryn's vocals have more "soul" to it.

Bey is a beast on a lot of those club tracks tho. To me, that's where she shines the most. I've never been a fan of her on the ballads. She comes off as trying to hard, because her basic voice isn't as "beautiful", so she tries to make up for it with the over the top theatrics (whatever musical term it is, but you know what I'm saying).
yah bro I understand it..most music listeners don't really know or really care about vocal ability other than how it "sounds" to them. ..as it should be. At the same time other skilled musicians and singers who've worked to hone and develop their ability notices the small things that most people miss (i.e- musicianship, versatility, intonotion) etc. just different tastes I guess.
