I swear those two and Sade have a secret island where they live at between albums

Even the band portion of ‘Sade’ doesn’t drop music much anymore. The self titled album “Sweetback” had a lot of heat and continues the with some of the same sound of love deluxe. They also put in a lot of work with Maxwell debut.

I’ll always pick ‘Voodoo’. Both albums were perfection but it stands alone outside of any era. Everything about it is more potent, creative, and original. I love brown sugar but I’m more likely to play it passively around a group. Voodoo’s production, alone, will paint pictures and take your mind places whether you’re passively or actively listening. Dude just comes out of the ether to drop 3 classics and disappears again, I love it lol

It’s also interesting to note how some artist make a big jump into artistic abyss. Like Stevie going from “Signed sealed delivered” to eventually transitioning to “talking book”. I feel like D’Angelo made a similar jump from “Brown sugar” to “Voodoo” or Erykah going from “Baduizm” to “mama’s gun” nikkas just went artistically super saiyan. I hope we live to see another creative collective, like the soulquarians, again. If not, fukk it, at least we got to live through all the beauty that came out it in real time.

Urban Hang Suite is definitely my fav album, if had to pick one. Then Voodoo..

Maxwell had the cheat code from the jump lol. his own production past + Stewart Matthewman/ other band portion of Sade was bound to make nothing but classics.

Never got the appeal of Voodoo, felt like breh was doing the most... don't really know how to describe it, guess I agree with breh that said he gotta be on some other shyt to throw it on while Brown Sugar is easier listening.

voodoo separates people with souls from the automatons.

if you listen to voodoo 10 times straight-through and don't fall under its spell then you lack depth and will never understand it.

brown sugar is nice and all but could be replicated by other artists.

no one else could have cast the spell that is voodoo.

Agree to a point but very few artists can make a song like Lady, Brown Sugar is more than 'Nice'.

bilal makes songs like on brown sugar. stevie wonder used to. maxwell did too.

their highs are even higher than what you have on 'brown sugar'.

none of them could do voodoo. not even crazy bilal.

you could put these straight on brown sugar

voodoo on the other hand is a perfect spell where d'angelo went where other artists wouldn't dare or be able to.

voodoo is on a deeper level and is meta-referential in that it works a spell on the listener.

voodoo is not an album called 'voodoo' nor does it contain songs about 'voodoo' .. it itself IS voodoo ..

Bilal and Maxwell were the two i was thinking of, but soul sista sounds more Voodoo like than anything on Brown Sugar.
