I think you're saying that mixtapes are where the action is at. That every prominent artist since 2003 had a mixtape that is easily better than any album they've dropped. So I'm looking for that classic mixtape for each artist. And you should have an idea of what I'm looking for by now - start with the mixtapes that you think would be up my alley.

I will say this - one classic mixtape I can think of is Return of the Mac by Prodigy - but that shyt was so good - they put it out as an album.

thats the thing, i have no clue what you like.

i only know you for '90s rappers.

prodigy? :flabbynsick:

^^^ Might as well do it publically too, to save repeating it, I'm interested too..

regarding rappers in this bracket:

young jeezy - trap or die series has at least 1 classic tape
jadakiss - the champ is here series has at least 2 classic tapes
juelz santana - final destination is said to be his best, but i never heard it. the "back like cooked crack" series is great. at least one arguable classic tape in there i guess.

and you already know about the legendary diplomats series. dblock has classic tapes too.

I love Return of the Mac. Its how a Mobb joint is supposed to be, music for any occasion. You can ride to it, chill to it, party to it, and work out to it. Its the most expensive mixtape ever lol

I realize how the game is and that its all about the mixtapes these days but the dudes you mentioned have no excuse not to drop good albums. All 3 came up listening to classic albums. And if they only care about the mixtapes why sign a deal? I give these young boys out here credit cuz at least theyre not signing deal like that. They put out good mixtapes and tour off of it. These older dudes stay signing deals put out good mixtapes and the albums are trash.

the difference is, the labels are interfering with the music.

if mobb deep tried to drop the infamous today, all those songs wouldnt be on the album. some of that stuff would be replaced with bullchit, and would be mixtape tracks instead.

and im not saying that the talent level is where it was back then, for the record.

but i will say that a guy like jada wouldve dropped a classic EASY if he were to come out in any of the golden eras. and im not clearing him of responsibility, cuz at the end of the day, jada's main downfall is trying to follow after big, mase & jay with the variety show albums. thats basically one of the downfalls in east coast hip-hop in general.

The labels been interfering. That's something acts have had to deal with for decades. Mobb Deep benefited from being on Loud cuz they clearly let their artists to what they want. The way I look at the mixtape game is pre-50 and post-50. Once he dropped 50 Cent is the future it changed how people got signed and changed the way people made mixtapes. Jada's debut came out in 01. Even tho it wasn't the 90s anymore he coulda made a better album. Honestly I think the Lox woulda benefited from staying with Bad Boy but that's another topic

50 crushed the mixtape game. He wasn't the first dude to get signed off mixtapes but he was the first to make such a big impact with em. He basically put guys like Clue, Kay Slay, and Flex outta the mixtape game. They were the mixtape kings at the time. On the east coast anyway

you claimed 50 changed the way people made mixtapes.

@The Ruler 09

soulja slim was pretty much on top of new orleans with his mixtapes when he came home. i never had the pleasure of listening to any.

@Ineedmoney504 prolly knows some titles to look for.
