Some people (especially White conservatives) believe that racism is only overt/extreme racism. Basically things like saying racial slurs openly & frequently, committing hate crimes, calling for certain groups of people to be wiped out/exterminated, etc.
So because Trump isn't actively doing those things, some idiots will give him the benefit of the doubt and plausible deniability. Also, many non-White Trumpers have cognitive dissonance. They think he's "not talking about me. Only the bad ones; I'm one of the good ones" or "Liberals/Democrats are just as racist, if not more than Trump."
It's all a bunch of BS and excuses. Trump is clearly racist, but unfortunately many people have their heads in the sand.
