If it's meaningless, why play the game at all?
For player pride, for hardcore fans
. Still meaningless as far as the tournament is concerned. And no one wants to see a game like that go to extra time and penalties which is the whole point

the nhl has a points system and even they got rid of ties awhile back because this is sports.This threadso stupid. Don't get the point.
These are group games where points are crucial. Americans don't have a points system like football.
Ties don't happen in knockout games
If you keep playing in football like conditions yesterday, very real chance someone dies. Ties make everything more interesting

I get what the TS is saying to a CASUAL watcher. Like yesterdays game the USA game was the primetime event here so when we took the lead in the 80 minute its like 
then the game reaches the 90th minute and the games not over they add 5 min so your like 
then it gets to the 94 minute they score to equalize then your like 
then they blow the whistle and the game ends in a tie
. Also the TS even though I know its a troll should understand there is different strategies depending on the set up of the tourney. I usually explain it like capture the flag in video games when both flags are out you have to be careful going all out because if they counter your weaker but if you have the lead or equal you sit back because its not the worst case scenario

so we should play extra time or go to penalties? Ties aren't that bad because they create story lines. A tie yesterday provides the greatest intrigue.

Why are the Jags and Browns playing week 17 games? Why are the 76ers playing game 82? Why are the Astros playing game 162?the playoff equivalent of football games cannot end in ties. they go to extra time and penalties if needed.

Yeah, teams playing "just for that point" could make for a drab watch to the neutrals and even hardcore fans (NO ONE wants to see a team in top-class level using 11 defenders and zero attackers i.e. Chelsea's MO against better teams, Iranians V Argentina) but usually it works itself out once there's been a goal; and there's a good chance a team with that kind of backward ass mentality will concede at some point (see: Chelsea and Iran)
Once the team going for just a point concedes, because rarely would they be the ones scoring first, and they now have to score to get that point, the game is blown open and that's really just part of the beauty of the game: how a team's mindset can change in seconds and they go from wanting a draw and being ultadefensive to realizing it would actually be much easier just to win it and actually attacking.
