A total of 750,793 applications were pending at the end of June, the latest period available. But the rate at which they are being processed is at the lowest in a decade, according to an analysis released this month by Boundless Immigration, a technology company in Seattle that helps immigrants obtain green cards and citizenship. The agency was able to work through only about half its applications in 2017, compared to about 60 percent in 2016. (Data for 2018 is not available.)

“Applications for citizenship have surged many times in the past and U.S.C.I.S. was able to bring enough resources to bear to tame them. Wait times have doubled and the agency is barely processing half of their backlog,” said Doug Rand, a founder of Boundless Immigration.

What do you mean "should've "?

Usually the process took 6-12 months, at least prior to Trump. When Trump came into office the processing time has moved from 12-18 months. But there's more to it.

Background: Permanent Residency aka a green card allows the holder to live and work in the US without a visa. Depending on the green card holder's country of origin, it also allows them travel to certain countries without a visa e.g. Canada, Mexico, Jamaica etc.

The green card is valid for 10 years from the date acquired. After the 10 years, it has to be renewed. Usually renewals are a straightforward process as far as you've been paying taxes and been a good citizen in society. However, at 5 years of holding your green card, you can apply for naturalization to become a full citizen. As a citizen, your citizenship status is permanent (unless you forfeit it) and there is no expiration date on your citizenship.

Prior to Trump, you had people who had permanent residencies for like 10+ years that never applied for naturalization because with a green card you get most of the benefits of a US citizen. You can work in the US and travel in and out of the country freely. The few limits are around voting, security clearance for government jobs and access to some Federal loans and such. Also the cost of applying for naturalization is $750.

So what's really happened is that people who were overdue to file i.e. already clocked 5 years but didn't file "ontime" started filing en mass due to Trump's stance on immigration. They were like "Lemme just get the citizenship and be over with it".

I know this because I should have filed back in May but didn't file till December :francis:

Per USCIS I should be ready by January 2020 so not too bad of a wait.

We'd better start producing professionals and babies at a much higher rate and Curb our consumer appetite.

Countries that stagnate or lose population have growing economic issues that can't be overcome since they can't fund their own society.

Backlogs? That explains why USCIS was mass hiring Immigration Service Officers awhile back.:jbhmm: One of my boy's works in one of them service centers as an officer and he has been working mad overtime and making bank off processing them applications.

"overpopulate"

You realize that as a country, America is on the far end as far as size. We have states that are very sparsely populated. We're not overpopulated or close to it from a land space perspective. Most of the population is concentrated in a select amount of cities and there is waay more land of nothingness. Take a drive from northern Indiana down to a southern state and see how much of nothingness there is compared to "civilization".

We're not suffering from a food shortage either. We have some food products that are so abundant (ie corn) that we struggle to find ways to use it besides as a food source.

Overpopulation is not an American problem.
