Wale was too jack of all trades sad to say. He could do anything but never found a niche or gimmick that stuck

JCole got the fake deep humble homeless gimmick

Drake got simp soliloquy fake tough guy gimmick

Cudi got the complete weirdo harmonizer gimmick

Kendrick got the super rapper mysterious gimmick

Meek got the street dude gimmick

What was left for Wale?

This is Wales blueprint for me. His most accessible piece of work.

Should’ve firmly leaned into the Bad/Lotus Flower Bomb/That Way type music, basically positively spotlighting black women/black love.

Let me keep it honest here: he was a bit early on this wave.

If Wale had come on the scene 3 to 5 years later he might be a way bigger artist.

I think the whole Seinfeld shyt plus the black positivity/love/spoken word type songs would have hit harder.

Why hasn't this dude tried acting? He could be pretty good on a Insecure/Love Life type show as a supporting character

The Manipulation

CC White

Bricks

Barry Sanders

these concepts have been seen before especially CC white, that shyt has been run down to the ground of comparing cocain to a White women, we have a whole slang for it

Barry sanders is a old run down concept used by rappers to, making a whole song using sport references has also been done before, i recall Kendrick having a song like it on his Training Day mixtape. years before that Barry song came out.

The manipulation is your basic, playa/ smash and dash type of song. Just because he put a fancy title on it caliling it " The _______" doesnt make it anymore high concept of a song than what Cole has done.

Razor Freestyle

Eye of the Tiger

The Bloom

The Body

3 Days 3 Hours

Chess

And many others....

Razor is just a WWE verison of the "All sports references to show how lyrical i am" type of song nikkas do:unimpressed:

Eye of the tiger is basically just a Wale's version of "Kevins Haryt" which Cole has done.

The Bloom is your typical metaphoric poem comparing women to flowers, which is cliche and has been used in poetry/rap forever. whether slightly touched in a few bars or in a whole song

Chess is pretty cool:ehh: i always liked that track espescially that Ray/reagan line

Wale isn't Lupe because no one is, but Wale is a superior lyricist to Cole by a sizeable gap and has a wider creative pallet by a sizeable gap.
goin off what you showed me, he really doesnt. nor is he a better lyricist. hes more willing to carry a whole lyrical theme than cole thru a song or base a whole song off a theme. But doing that does not mean your the better lyricist

Plus alot of those concepts like CC white, Barry sanders, have been reused and have been covered over already by others

Cole has a better voice and delivery and enunciation. He has improved a great deal in recent years and has advantages over Wale, but where ya'll lose me is when I'm hearing stuff like Cole is way better or it's not even a conversation. I find that absurd as lyricism, creativity, and concepts are aspects of rapping that are hugely important to people who appreciate the art form of rapping.
those are 3 things that are def factors, but they are not the end all be all to cover someone's ass when they are outdone at everything else. Cole is better at flow, delievery, voice, cadence, songwriting

and creativity and concepts fall more in align with artistry not rapping, you can be dope at rapping and not be a good concept type of artist(Lil wayne, Jay Z)

And concepts dont mean shyt if they are not well executed right, so even if you have a concept, Who fukkin cares if it falls flat on its face and doesnt make for enjoyable music(which is the fukkin point of all this)

even tho im defending Cole, i found KOD initially somewhat subpar even tho it had what you can call a "creative" concept, i didnt like it much. it has grown on me a little tho.

Cole's fanbase overrated his lyrical abilities(specifically pre-Offseason) because they're comparing him to mainstream radio giants. It's the equivalent of being the big fish in a little pond. Offseason is the first time I've heard him truly come into his potential as a rapper.
kinda like you ovverating Wale, and his basic ass allegorical concept raps:mjlol:

"OH my god he made a song comparing cocaine to a white girl:whew::gladbron:"

"who would have thought of doin that:mindblown:?"

:mjlol:

You took a hot minute to respond. I was expecting you to actually post Cole songs to reinforce your point like I did, rather than an extended cut version of "I don't like Wale" :pachaha:

Aight breh I'm done with this thread. You win :mjlol:
