All I'm saying is as someone whos from DC I and many others saw the initial move to MMG as him trying to align himself with someone that represents more of what DC fukks with on the Hip-Hop side. Not to say Ross is universally beloved or some shyt, but it was just an extension of him doing the song with Gucci or jumping on Gogo songs back in the day, he wants to appeal to the streets because he's a narcissist and knows thats where the heart of the city is...
Wale is capable of making this above average BET music forever but people who fukked with him from jump (06,07,08) before he was even a well known blog rapper know this really isn't him. He had skits and little shyt he would rap about back then sarcastically dissing the kind of artist he ironically had to settle into and align himself with.
His old shyt gave me more of a Roots/Tribe/Camp Lo vibe and then when he was fukking with Mark Ronson he was doing all types of stuff, he was borderline trying to be on some male MIA shyt. If all things went the best with Interscope he'd probably never even have done a song with Ross, he would be in a hip-pop lane and would have smash singles and be a tumblr rapper..but deep down he probably wouldn't be satisfied with that because he wanted respect from DC and that would never happen if he continued down that Ronson route
The first album flopped though, so he settled on Ross as his last lifeline. Lucky for him it worked out and he has a semblance of what he always wanted, a lot more people in the city fukk with him now that he's popular and rolling with a winning team..and he was smart enough to cater to female fans and just own that lane in the crew.
I get why you say him and Ross have the same vibe sometimes with that smooth laid back production, but that was not what Wale was pre-MMG content or production wise...everything you're saying is after the fact. That's like say Kevin Durant going to the Heat and playing Ray Allen's role...and you say well shyt he can shoot so why would anyone say he doesn't fit that role...but of course that's not all of KD's game, he'd just be good enough to marginalize himself and accentuate one part of it.
Same with Wale..he's only doing this sultry/"im ambitious" shyt because he knows this is the only way to really fit in with the crew. The old Wale would probably be subliminally dissing Rick Ross' repetitive hooks and "fakeness".
