Walmart recognizes what's coming down the pike: inflationary (in the best sense) economics. The labor market's gonna tighten like Mitch McConnell's a$$hole when presented with a stimulus bill, and the Confederate Party race to the bottom economic shyt is starting to be shown the door.

Hopefully this means the 15 an hour movement is far from over, because until labor starts getting some of its power back, the corporate powers are going to be a continuing threat as they slide more money back to the right, doing their "playing both sides" fukkery again.

You'd think they've learned by now that the Republicans' "Socialism for the rich" and total deregulation and kneecapping of the social safety net is a dead end and a threat even to them but, no. All they prolly care about still is next quarter. :stopitslime:
Huh? Automation is going to kill enough jobs to make a $15/hr rate feasible for companies. They aren’t caving to pressure. They know what the long game is: fewer employees.

Not in this short a time frame. Not even Amazon is automating that much yet - if they were they wouldn't still be hiring at the rate they are. The pressure comes from proactive economics and market forces are going to be driving up wages, so Wally World is just getting in early.

I don’t know man. We are probably 5 years out from being without cashiers.

They’ll pay you 15 an hour to lift heavy boxes and pull palettes but there will be such high turnover.

Automating everything will make 30% of the population unemployed.

After being the face of the minimum wage welfare state, Walmart tryna get a step ahead :takedat:

Walmart for a few years has been quietly trying to shed its reputation as the go to retail establishment for poor people. They're as responsible as anyone else for the growth of organic/"natural" food sector bc of their purchasing power.

Grocery stores are dumping billions into automation. What you'll see first are the AI powered shopping carts. They are already testing these at selected companies/locations. Basically gets rid of the cashiers by totaling the cost of all items you place into the cart and accepting payment. Initial studies have shown that shoppers spend on average 18% more with these carts. So increases productivity/profit margin AND decreases labor costs.

Thats actually dope. The bottleneck is always check out so eliminating that would speed up transactions by a ton

I wonder how long til this starts up again with a new goalpost...

If minimum wage kept up with inflation and productivity it would be $24/hour. :stopitslime:

I go in the store all the time to get 3-5 items. Butter, vegetables, garlic, whatever. I do the math in my head but I can def see how having an AI powered cart that tallied everything for me would result in me buying more shyt. Maybe I go in solely to buy onions and peppers...end up getting some broccoli, carrots, and ginger too.

because the cart is adding up the price as you shop? :mindblown: wouldnt you be saying something like "shyt i was only gonna spend 20 bucks"?

i guess this is going completely over my head :dead:

If they’re like me and pick up random shyt they don’t need, but instead of having those 3-10 mins in line to re-evaluate and dump unnecessary stuff or ask the cashier to send items back, it’s in your cart and you just roll with it.

I’m the queen of going to target for paper towels, toilet tissue and 409 yet coming out with those items plus snacks, clothes, new plates and a lamp :dead:
