In DC, they backed out of building 2 new stores in areas that need the vitality and jobs. Fukkers.:martin:

All because Walmart didn't want to pay the DC minimum wage of $10.

I heard that when walmart closes a store the building just stays there. It can never be used for anything else.

Not true. But a bunch of the buildings go to the US government for urban warfare storage facilities. There's a YouTube video on in.

Nah, they turn them into other things....

Your post inspired me to look up "abandoned wal mart" videos on youtube :whoo:
I was watching a video about walmart a long time ago and it mentioned something about that. Ill try to find it again.

They got greedy trying to open too many stores in poor locations and it's coming back to bite them in the ass.

That's a big part of it, and there's also the fact that Amazon is gaining a lot of ground on them right now because of the convenience of online shopping. People are going out to buy shyt less and buying them online more - why spend gas driving to a dirty Walmart with unhappy employees and children running around everywhere when you can order something online and have it sent to your door? This is the mentality of many consumers today.

Walmart is realizing this and they're starting to focus more on their e-commerce side rather than their storefront side. The problem for them is, Amazon already has years worth of built-out infrastructure to this end and it will probably take a while for Walmart to catch up.

Amazon already has huge fulfillment centers around the country and thousands of sellers helping them to source items and keep them in stock across the country. They've even built some internationally and have cut deals with UPS to get cheaper shipping rates. For Walmart they're going to have to figure out how they can even come close to that before they lose more ground in the retail space.

because you have to spend shipping and handling and wait a couple days. you also cant buy food/milk on amazon. people go grocery shopping and just buy whatever else they need while they are already shopping. its a convenience that online shopping doesnt have yet

This doesn't make sense
It actually does...other than a Target or K-Mart what other mega-retailer has enough clout and makes enough sales to warrant using a space that large?

As well, look at all of the other mega retailers that went the way of the buffalo.

Bloockbuster
Media Play
Borders
Service Merchandise
Comp USA'
and other casualties of the internet era (including malls, which are dying left and right. And the ones that are completely dead can't be used for anything else...they try using them for corporate lots for office space but that's too much space for that and not too many companies are willing to relocate to those areas especially with business and industries downsizing and being outsourced with computer technology).

target, wal-mart, and k-mart are basically the only ones left and they combined everything possible from all of those stores and from other areas (groceries, clothes, electronics, tools, auto parts, etc)...so what happens when those die out?

The future of retail doesn't look to good. More of them will close.
